Adlefas

S. Angelo d’Alife

Listen to the story

Adlefas is Allifae, now Alife, a Samnite town in a bend of the Volturno below the Matese mountains, whose rectangular Roman walls with four gates survive almost complete. Rome took it from the Samnites in the fourth century BC, and during the war with Hannibal armies camped on its land. In one of the poet Horace's satires, greedy guests empty whole jars of wine into big Allifan cups, a kind of vessel named after the town.
