Ad Malum
Vidin
Ad Malum is probably Bononia, today Vidin on the Danube in Bulgaria, a Roman fort held by Dalmatian horsemen, refortified by Justinian and important in the wars against the Avars; the old Bulgarian name Bdin goes back to Bononia. The map's own name may come from a stream called Malus above the town. Inscriptions found at Vidin were mostly carried there from nearby Ratiaria, the Roman colony to which the fort probably belonged.
