Ad Mediam

Băile Herculane

Ad Mediam, at the middle, probably took its name from lying midway between the Danube and the mountain pass on the road to Tibiscum. Its hot springs near Mehadia in Romania were already known in Roman times: votive inscriptions from 150 to 268 thank the powers of the waters, Aesculapius and Hygieia, and above all Hercules, who was said to have found these warm springs on his travels. The spa is still called Băile Herculane, the baths of Hercules. A Roman camp and a customs post stood here as well.
