Ad Mensulas means at the little tables, perhaps the tables of a roadside inn, and the name has survived in the parish church of San Pietro ad Mensulas at Sinalunga in the Val di Chiana. That is where the station is placed today, on the road from Chiusi to Siena, and remains of buildings, lead pipes from baths and graves have been found in the area. Older research looked for it near Montalcino, where an eighth-century church bore the same name.
