Ad Labores Ponte Ulcae

Bobota

Ad Labores Ponte Ulcae, at the works of the Ulca bridge, marks the crossing of the Vuka near Bobota in Croatia, on the road from Mursa to Cibalae, the Roman Vinkovci. The river winds through wide marshes: here in AD 7, as the Greek historian Cassius Dio tells, a governor of Moesia marching against the Pannonian rebels was caught in the swamps of the Ulca, and in 489 Theoderic led his Ostrogoths through them against the Gepids. Older research saw an old stone bridge still standing and, at low water, the wooden piles of an earlier one.
