Thebeta

Listen to the story

Thebeta lay thirty-three Roman miles from Nisibi, on the road towards Singara. A late Roman list of army units names a cavalry troop after it, the equites Thibithenses, and Greek writers knew the place too: Stephanus of Byzantium as Thebeta, the historian Theophylact Simocatta as Thebothon. Older research judged its position beyond doubt, even though the region had never been explored; to this day the site has not been pinned down.
