Magnesia

Tekin, 3 km südl. von Ortaklar

Magnesia on the Maeander, at Tekin near Ortaklar, was founded by settlers from Magnesia in Thessaly. The exiled Themistocles found refuge here in 465 BC, and in 87 BC the city stood almost alone on Rome's side against Mithridates. Its chief cult was that of Artemis Leukophryene, whose temple ruins survive, and the destruction by the Goths in 262 ended its heyday. The map leaves out the road line to Ephesus and gives thirty miles where the Roman writer Pliny counts fifteen, and the figure towards Antiochia sits at the very edge of a parchment sheet, its middle character unreadable.
