Trallis

Aydın

Listen to the story

Trallis is Tralles, at Aydın in Turkey, and it has slipped on the map: it really lay west of Hierapolis, on the road between Magnesia and Antioch on the Maeander, and seems to have been entered one line too high. The Greek geographer Strabo describes it on a flat-topped hill with a strong citadel, home to wealthy citizens, founded, he thought, by Argives and a Thracian tribe, the Trallians. For a time it was called Seleucia, and for a century from 25 BC Caesarea. Caesar himself tells how, in its temple of Victory, where his statue stood, a palm was shown sprouting between the paving stones.
