Trasmarisca

Tutrukan

Trasmarisca is Tutrakan on the Danube, a Roman fort facing the mouth of a river on the far bank, which seems to explain its name: across from the Mariscus. On the map a small stroke over the first a stands for the missing n of Transmarisca, best seen on the photographs of 1888. The fort grew important from the second century, when a cohort of Thracians was stationed there; Constantine built a fort called Constantiniana Daphne on the opposite bank, and in the fourth century a commander of the Eleventh Legion sat here, with a station for river ships.
