Mallo

Karataş, Adana

Mallo is Mallos, a Cilician city near the mouth of the Pyramos, by Karataş in the province of Adana. It stood on a hill by the river, which ships had to sail up to reach it, and its harbour was Magarsos at the river mouth. Its founding was dated back to the time of the Trojan War; an ancient account of Alexander calls it no mean city of Cilicia and has its fleet sail to Tyre, and a Latin inscription found here names Italian merchants. It is now usually taken to be the same city as Piramum, Antioch on the Pyramos, which the map draws separately.
