Road station
Magalasso
? Şarkışla
Magalasso is probably the Malandara of the Roman register of routes, a station on the road from Caesarea to Sebasteia. If so, it lay at Şarkışla in Turkey, in the valley of the Baltalar Su, a tributary of the upper Halys; it would match the rest-house of Gedik Han in Ottoman sources, and in the Middle Ages a road branched off here by way of Tonosa towards Melitene. The mound at Şarkışla has yielded pottery of the Copper Age and hoards from the time of the Hittite empire. The near-twin Megalasso, the Megalossos of Ptolemy, appears elsewhere on the map, in a more fitting place.
