Road station

Sorpara

Sorpara was a road station on the route from Mazaca Caesarea towards Sebasteia, a road that kept its strategic importance in Byzantine and Ottoman times. At about the distance the map gives from Caesarea lies the Hittite mound of Kültepe, ancient Kanesh, with the Hellenistic and Roman settlement of Anisa. One suggestion finds this station, or the next one, Foroba, in Sobara, the last town the geographer Ptolemy lists in the Cappadocian district of Kilikia. On the map the start of the stretch on to Foroba is not marked.
