Sopatos

Sopatos has two candidates. It may be Apaturos on the Taman peninsula, site of a lavishly built temple of Aphrodite Ourania; even a Bosporan king, Aspurgus, had a dedication to her carved on a marble block there, and Pliny lists the place alongside Hermonassa, Stratoclia and Phanagoria. Or it may be Pityus in Colchis, a Greek colony that later housed the Fifteenth Legion, and the place to which the exiled John Chrysostom was being sent in 407 when he died on the way.
