Sostra

Lomets · Lomec

Sostra, by today's Lomets in the Haemus, grew around a fort of Antoninus Pius on the road from Oescus to Philippopolis; after 145 the second cohort of Mattiaci was stationed here. Around it rose at least two civilian settlements, a shrine of the Thracian Rider, a mausoleum and an early Christian basilica, a small centre of Roman life in the mountains until the Huns destroyed it in the 5th century. The map wrongly joins it to Nicopolistro with a road line but no figure, an easy slip for a copyist. Looters have troubled the excavations.
