Mesorome

Mesorome stood at a fork: on the road from Sebasteia to Nicopolis, a branch turned off here through Speluncis towards Comana Pontica. The map even shows the junction in its lettering, for a gap opens before the last two letters of the name to let the road coming in from Speluncis pass through. The geographer Ptolemy lists the town among the inland places of Pontus. Its site is disputed: it is often placed near Suşehri in Turkey, while one suggestion recognises it as Şahna Çimen, a stop in Ottoman route books of the 16th and 17th centuries, in the valley of the Kelkit, the ancient Lycus.
