Anniaca

? Koyulhisar, Eski Kale

Anniaca lay in the valley of the Lycus, the Kelkit Çayı, on the mountain road across the Pontic Alps from Nicopolis to Polemonion, probably near Koyulhisar. No Roman remains have been found in the town itself, so the station is sought below the great castle of Yukarı Kale, which overlooks the valley from a rock two hundred metres high; one view holds that the settlement moved up into this fortress, perhaps in the 7th century. Lead was mined nearby from the 1st century BC. On the map the next stretch is drawn as two, with an empty bend between them.
