Corifanio

bei Keremköy

Listen to the story

Corifanio is the Koryphantis of the Greek geographer Strabo, a coastal village belonging to Mytilene on Lesbos, and the Roman writer Pliny mentions its famous oysters. It lay on the southern shore of the Gulf of Adramyttium, a gulf the map does not draw at all, and is placed near the village of Keremköy, close to Ayvalık. An old settlement site and the remains of a bridge, perhaps late Roman, lie nearby, and many ancient and Byzantine stones are built into the village houses. The name may come from Korybas, a son of Cybele.
