Assos

Behramkale · Beyramkale

Assos sat on a crag of volcanic trachyte above the sea at Behramkale, an Aeolian city founded by settlers from Methymna. The Greek geographer Strabo praises its strong walls and the long, steep climb from the harbour, which was protected by a great mole. The Stoic philosopher Cleanthes was born here, and Aristotle lived in Assos for a time as the guest of its ruler Hermias. The Roman writer Pliny tells of a stone found around the city that consumed the bodies laid in it, and called it sarcophagus, the flesh-eater. The apostle Paul also passed through.
