Astura

Torre di Astura [3 · 4]

Listen to the story

Astura was a small island at the mouth of the river of the same name near Antium, now joined to the land at Torre Astura. Cicero had a villa here, where he withdrew in grief after his daughter's death, and from here he tried to escape by sea before his murder. Later Augustus and Tiberius had villas at Astura, with a great fish pond whose remains now lie under water. The map leaves out the river that gave the place its name.
