Aserie
Podgrađe near Benkovac
Listen to the story
Aserie is Asseria, the great ruined hill town at Podgrađe near Benkovac in Croatia. Its Liburnian fortifications go back to the fifth or fourth century BC; in Caesar's time the Romans began new walls, finished early in the imperial age and strengthened again in late antiquity, before the town was destroyed in the fifth or sixth century. The Roman writer Pliny lists the Asseriates as a Liburnian community exempt from tribute. Over a hundred inscriptions have been found. The map's spelling probably renders Asseriae, at Asseria, with one s lost.
