Arzum

Kalugerovo

Arzum, written in the accusative, 'towards Arzos', took its name from the river Arzos, today's Sazliyka, perhaps once the white river; the geographer Ptolemy wrongly let it flow into the Sea of Marmara instead of the Hebros. The station, at today's Kalugerovo, lay roughly halfway along the main road from Philippopolis to Adrianople, in the territory of Augusta Traiana. Finds include coins of the 3rd to 5th centuries, lead seals, a marble tablet to the Thracian Rider, a marble head of Pan and the remains of a Roman bridge. In early Byzantine times it was a well-known market.
