Pizo

Dimitrievo

Pizo was a market town on the road from Philippopolis to Adrianople, founded or refounded in 202 under Septimius Severus. Its founding is recorded on stone, found at today's Dimitrievo: an edict of the governor of Thrace, Sicinnius Clarus, lists the settlers, the villages they came from, their privileges and their duties. Shrines of the Thracian Rider and of Apollo and a hoard of silver coins have been found near the site; the name may point to marshy ground. Justinian later fortified it. The map's twelve miles on to Arzum are probably a slip for eighteen.
