Plotinopoli

Didymoteikhon · Didymoteichon

Plotinopoli, Plotinopolis, was named by Trajan after his wife Plotina; the map keeps the correct form, before later spellings drifted to Plutinopolis. It lay where the Erythropotamos joins the Hebros, though the map does not show this. Justinian restored its walls, and perhaps fortified the steep rock nearby as well, which would explain the later name, Didymoteichon, the twin walls, still borne by the town today. On the low hill of Hagia Petra a walled Roman town with a mosaic floor and a cemetery has been excavated. On the map the stretch on to Zirinis is drawn as two.
