Pitinum
bei Madonna di Pettino [Pleiades]
Listen to the story
Pitinum lay at the foot of Monte Pettino just above L'Aquila, where the church of Madonna di Pettino keeps its name, on the new road of the emperor Claudius shortly before it followed the river Aterno out of Sabine country into the land of the Vestini. It must not be mixed up with two towns of the same name in Umbria. The map's twelve Roman miles, about eighteen kilometres, to Prifernum look too long, perhaps a miscopied seven.
