Pollentia

Pollenzo

At Pollentia, on 6 April 402, the Roman general Stilicho fought Alaric and his Visigoths in a great battle. The town, today the village of Pollenzo in Piedmont, where the Stura flows into the Tanaro, was founded in the late second century BC and became famous for the dark wool of its sheep and for its pottery. In the war after Caesar's murder it sided with Mark Antony. Its layout still follows a rectangular Roman plan, and traces of walls, an aqueduct and an amphitheatre survive. On the map the distance from Alba is missing; it should be about eight Roman miles.
