Berone

Stara Zagora · Стара Загора

Berone is a slip for Beroie, Beroe, with one stroke of a letter missing; the Thracian name may mean fertile. Its official name was Augusta Traiana, today's Stara Zagora, and it ran its affairs like a Greek city, with Greek as its leading language; veterans, wealthy Thracians and settlers from Asia Minor lived here. Marcus Aurelius walled it, and its mint struck coins until Gallienus. In 314 the emperor Licinius took refuge here, and from 355 Bishop Liberius of Rome was exiled here. Though it ranked with Philippopolis as the great city of its province, the map gives it no picture.
