Bergule

Lüleburgaz

Bergule, today's Lüleburgaz on the Ergene river, has a Thracian name built on a word for height. It was an important station on the military road from Adrianople to Constantinople, and a dedication found in Rome honours Apollo of Bergule. Early in the 5th century it was renamed Arcadiopolis after the emperor Arcadius, so the map still shows it before the change. Attila took it in 442, and Theoderic's Goths besieged it in 473. In the Middle Ages it was a strong fortress. Two reliefs of the Thracian Rider from the 1st century have been found.
