Bergusium

Bourgoin-Jallieu

Bergusium is Bourgoin, a village of the Allobroges on the road from Vienne towards Lausanne. The Roman register of routes calls it Bergusia. A tombstone describing a man as Bergusianus, a man of Bergusium, supports the form of the name, while another inscription, from Narbonne, naming a Bergusitanus was once linked with this place but is now thought to refer to a Bergusia in Spain. Older research found the map's distances on both sides exact, although some older copies give twelve instead of sixteen for the stretch onward.
