Atalia
Antalya
Atalia is Antalya, the harbour city of Pamphylia that Attalus the Second of Pergamon founded around 158 BC and named after himself, perhaps as a rival to Side. It stands at the edge of a travertine terrace about forty metres high. Pompey fled here in 48 BC, and Paul passed through on his first missionary journey; the gate built for the emperor Hadrian's visit in 130 AD survives. On the map, oddly, no red road line links the city with Phaselis. Strabo and Arrian say the coastal road there was not always passable, though a copyist's slip is also possible.
