Aspendo

Belkis

Aspendo is Aspendos, at Belkis, a city on a steep flat-topped hill beside the river Eurymedon, which even larger ships could sail up to the city. Greek tradition called it a foundation of Argos, but its early coins bear a native name, Estwediiys, which may point back to a king Asitawandia late in the eighth century BC. Near here the Athenian Kimon defeated the Persians in 469 BC, and Alexander occupied the city in 334 BC. It traded in salt, oil, grain, wine and horses, and Cicero calls it an old and noble town, full of the finest statues.
