Sea or bay
Pamphilicum Pelagus
MB von Antalia (Miller)
Listen to the story
Pamphilicum Pelagus is the sea off Pamphylia, the coastal plain of Asia Minor around Antalya, and today it is the Gulf of Antalya in Turkey. Pelagus is a Greek word for the open sea, and the map's wording echoes the Greek geographers Strabo and Ptolemy, while the Roman historian Livy called the same waters the Pamphylian Sea. On the parchment the name has badly faded, its beginning probably lost in a hole, and only older copies still read it in full.
