Portus Themomontus

bei Emineh (Miller)

Listen to the story

Portus Themomontus was a harbour, as the word portus tells us, and its name has partly faded from the parchment, so even the second-to-last letter is now uncertain. It is probably a garbled form of Haemimontus, the Haemus mountains, now the Stara Planina, which the Roman writer Pliny mentions on this coast. The harbour lay near Cape Emine in Bulgaria, where the range runs down into the Black Sea, between the towns of Naulochus and Mesambria. Later, one of the provinces of Thrace carried the same name, Haemimontus.
