Lactora
Lectoure o. Castéra-Lectourois
Lactora is Lectoure, set on a height above the Gers, where a Gallic hill town stood before the Romans. Its most famous finds are twenty-two altars recording the taurobolium, the bull sacrifice of the Great Mother, from the second and third centuries. An inscription of 105 names an imperial procurator responsible for the provinces of Lugdunensis and Aquitania and also for Lactora itself. Around 300 the upper town was walled again with reused monuments, and by 506 it had a bishop. Three roads met here, but the map gives no figure for the stretch to Agen.
