Cypsaria

Contellet Garaisjeh

Cypsaria, the Gypsaria of Ptolemy, was the third station on the western road from Aila across Arabia Petraea, forty-eight Roman miles from the port. Older research placed it at Contellet Garaisjeh, where the remains of an old fort lie near the mouth of a side valley opening into the Araba, but the site has never been firmly identified. The map gives sixteen miles from Rasa and twenty-eight on to Lysa. The name is clearest on the photograph of 1888.
