Cythero
Gideriz, früher Kidros bei Sütlüce
Cythero is Kytoros, today's Gideriz on the Black Sea coast east of Amastris, a harbour in a sheltered bay already named by Homer. Legend made Kytoros, a son of Phrixus, its founder, and it was once a trading post of Sinope. Its hills were famous for boxwood; Catullus calls it 'Cytorus rich in box'. The map moves it inland, because the coastal stations after Amastris were hung onto Amasia by mistake, and it spells the name with th, perhaps thinking of the island of Cythera.
