Humayma (Barrington)
Havarra, the Auara of Ptolemy, is today's Humayma in south-western Jordan. A late Roman list of army posts stations a unit of native mounted archers here, so it was part of the frontier defences. Excavations have found baths, irrigation works, mosaics and coins, a fort built soon after AD 106, three churches and a chapel from around 400, and from the Abbasid period a mosque and a palace, before the place was abandoned around 750. Stephanus of Byzantium records a legend that the name means white.
