Helega

bei Bafra?

Helega seems to have been the ancient name of the land at the mouth of the Halys, the river now called the Kızılırmak, and the station is sought near Bafra. One suggestion equates it with Gadilon, the town of a plain that the Greek geographer Strabo praises for its soft-wooled sheep and its gazelles; Pompey gave part of it to the Galatian ruler Deiotarus. Another puts the station on a mound by the first ford of the Halys, near the excavations at İkiztepe, settled since the Copper Age. On the map the name sits a little to the right of the river.
