Ancon

bei der Mündung des Yeşil Irmak

Ancon is the Greek word for an elbow or bend, and the harbour probably took its name from a headland jutting out like an elbow near Çiva Burnu, at the mouth of the Iris, the Yeşil Irmak; the map shows neither the headland nor the river mouth. Apollonius, in his poem of the Argonauts, describes the cape rising great and high above the land, and the geographer Ptolemy calls it the Ancon of the Leucosyrians. The forty Roman miles the map gives on to Heracleon are far too many.
