Caena

Ünye

A miscopied letter turned Oenoe into Caena, and the slip already stood in the late Roman source that the map shares with the Ravenna list. The real name lives on in Ünye, a town on the Black Sea coast at the mouth of the Oinios, where ships found a naturally sheltered landing. No ancient remains can be seen today, but a road led south from here through the mountains to Neocaesarea, and a fortress guarded it a little inland, with remains from Hellenistic to Ottoman times. The map draws neither the river nor that road.
