Cabraca

Tabarca

Cabraca is Thabraca, now Tabarka in Tunisia, a town probably of Punic origin at the mouth of the river Tusca, which marked the border of Numidia. Pliny calls it a town of Roman citizens, Ptolemy a colony. Its harbour shipped the marble of Simitthus, reached by a branch road that Hadrian built in 129. An ancient commentator on Juvenal speaks of great forests full of apes around it, and it was here that the rebel Gildo met his death. Bishops are recorded from 256 to 646.
