Cadara

Umm Qais

Cadara is Gadara, a fortified city of the Decapolis on a high ridge above the Yarmuk, now the ruins of Umm Qais in Jordan. Pompey freed it from Jewish rule, and the city counted its years from that moment, in 64 or 63 BC; Augustus later gave it to Herod. The geographer Strabo names its famous sons, among them the Epicurean Philodemus, the poet Meleager and the satirist Menippus. Remains of a colonnaded street paved with black basalt survive, and very hot springs lay nearby. On the map the road from here to Tiberias crosses the Jordan.
