Lake

Lacus Tiberias

See Genezareth

Listen to the story

The map writes this lake as Lacus Tiberis on two lines, and a later hand squeezed in an A to make it Lacus Tiberias, the lake of Tiberias, after the city on its shore that honoured the emperor Tiberius. It is the Sea of Galilee, known in the Gospels also as the lake of Gennesaret, and in the Hebrew Bible as the sea of Kinnereth. Its surface lies about two hundred and ten metres below the Mediterranean, it is about twenty-one kilometres long, and its water level changes with the seasons.
