Lake
Lacus Verbanus / Lacus Larius
Lake Maggiore
Listen to the story
This large lake at the foot of the Alps has no name on the map, perhaps dropped by a later copyist. The river flowing out of it points to Lacus Verbanus, Lake Maggiore, which the Ticino runs through, while the town of Como drawn beside it points to Lacus Larius, Lake Como, so the mapmaker may have merged the two into one. Pliny names both lakes together and tells of fish with striking pointed scales that appeared in them every year when the Pleiades rose. Lake Como was a busy route from the Po plain to the Alpine passes and on into Central Europe.
