Lignido

Liqeni i Ohrit, Охридско Езеро (AL,MAK)

Listen to the story

Only a few letters of this name survive on the map, among them G, N and a final O, and as early as 1753 an editor read it Lignido. The water it labels is Lake Ohrid, on the border between Albania and North Macedonia. The name recalls Lychnidus, the Roman town on its shore, today's Ohrid, a stop on the Via Egnatia, the great road from the Adriatic to Constantinople.
