Lake
Lacus salinarum hic sal per se conficitur
Sivash
Listen to the story
Beneath this lake the map adds a rare note in Latin, Lacus salinarum, hic sal per se conficitur: lake of the salt works, here the salt makes itself. The name written in the water can no longer be read. It is most likely the Sivash, the shallow, very salty lagoons in the north of Crimea, cut off from the Sea of Azov by a sandbar some hundred and ten kilometres long, where strong evaporation leaves the salt behind on its own. Strabo called it the Putrid Lake. The map, stretched from west to east, sets it near towns on the far side of the Strait of Kerch.
