Lake

Lacus Eupilis

Lago di Pusiano

Listen to the story

Here the green paint of a lake has eaten right through the parchment, leaving a hole with a dark outline; it is plain on a photograph of 1976, though curiously not on one of 1888. Without the lake, the river Lambro flowing from it would have no source. The lake carries no name, but it is taken for Pliny's Lacus Eupilis, today the Lago di Pusiano north of Milan, which the Lambro crosses on its way to the Po. In Roman times the lake was far larger, and a late Roman author called the Lambro 'sedgy'.
