Lacus Clisius

Lago di Viverone (Miller) · Chiese (river) (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Lacus Clisius, written in red, is known only from this map, which draws it at the foot of the Alps with a river that crosses the road from Aosta to Ivrea and winds down to the Po. Where it lay is hotly disputed: Lake Orta, Lake Lugano and the Lago di Viverone near Ivrea have all been proposed. Another reading takes the river for the Lys, still crossed by a Roman bridge at Pont-Saint-Martin, and the lake for a small tarn high in the Gressoney valley, where the Romans mined gold.
