Sauronisena

bei Gölköy ?

Sauronisena lay on the mountain road from Polemonion on the Black Sea to Nicopolis, probably near Gölköy, on the edge between coastal farming and highland fields. On a hill there stand the ruins of a castle that controlled the road; it is attributed to the Persian king Darius the Third, but its tunnels and pottery point to Hellenistic beginnings, most of what survives is Byzantine, and it was still in use in the 18th century. The map gives no figure from Polemonion, and its sixteen miles on to Matuasco are too few; perhaps twenty-one was meant.
