Praesidio

Ruinen El Messad (Miller) · Khirbet al-Khalde (Barrington)

Praesidio comes from the Latin praesidium, a guard post or garrison, and this one lay on the road from the Gulf of Aqaba towards Petra. A late Roman list of army posts names a cohort of Phrygians at Praesidium, and a cavalry regiment at a place close by. The site is placed at Khirbet al-Khalde. The map counts twenty-one Roman miles, about thirty-one kilometres, from Ad Dianam and twenty-four on to Hauarra, though older research thought the twenty-one miles really belong to a stretch from Aila.
