Aenos

Sulem (Miller) · Phaine or Buraq (Barrington)

Aenos lay on the road from Bostra to Damascus, perhaps at the ancient Phaena, now El-Mesmiye in Syria, a bishop's seat in the fourth century with a praetorium and a basilica. The map's own distances would rather put it a little further along, at Es Sa-ade. It counts thirty-seven Roman miles from Chanata, about fifty-five kilometres, and twenty-four on to a stop whose name is lost. Here the map also leaves out Rhimea, where an inscription names a veteran of a dromedary unit.
